Road Trip Ready Packing!
5:24 PM
Wedding season is upon us! With spring and summer in full motion, save the dates are being postmarked like no tomorrow! My husband, Christopher, and I are headed up to Maine (his home state) for his cousin's wedding this Saturday. It's positively beautiful up in Maine, particularly in the summer. Although fall's colors in New England are lovely, the weather in the summer is splendid. Rather than having the quickest and busiest weekend, we're turning this into a mini vacation of sorts by heading out tomorrow and staying for a week. We want to have time to visit old friends, go to the beach, help out with the wedding, and to simply relax. That's what vacations are for, right? Since it's going to be a week, obviously the suitcase may need to be a bit larger, but I've decided to show you my crafty ways of savvy packing!
After moving back and forth across the country multiple times for college and summer jobs, I've learned my way around the travel bag. Below are my tips to be Road Trip Ready so you can sit back in the car and not drive the whole way thinking, "Did I forget anything?"
The first thing I always do is pull out my special occasion outfit, if there is one. In this case, it's the wedding, so I made sure to get my dress, heels, belt and necklaces.
I've always had an issue with bringing necklaces with me anywhere, as they get so tangled and it's much easier to leave them behind and sacrifice a lack of accessories than to spend a good thirty-five minutes wrestling with chains and dangly pieces. One solution I've found is to clasp the necklace together, and to wrap the chain in aluminum foil! Works like a charm....pun intended. If you put them in a freezer baggy, it keeps them nice and organized and ready for wear.
The quickest way to choose outfits is to start with the bottom; the base layer, if you will.
I chose a pair of coral shorts and a striped cotton skirt. Perfect for 80degrees.
Once the bottoms are picked, choose as many tops as possible to go with the other half! Concise packing is the best packing.
After tops, I get all of my shoes together, and a just-in-case cardigan for those chillier Maine moments. Put your socks in your shoes, too! That saves so much space. You wouldn't think so, but trust me, balls of socks take up lots of room.
Since we'll be on vacation, I may need my bathing suit for the beach, and a cute little cover-up that's actually a tank dress from Old Navy, so another little back up outfit is thrown in here. I also threw in some exercise gear in the event I go for a run, play volleyball, or any other fun summer sport.
Once I get everything together, I roll it all up, resembling a Nestle Tollhouse Slice & Bake package. Mmmmm...
I put the pants and skirts on the bottom, shirts on top, then accessories, and shoes laying top down on everything and TADA! A week's worth of clothes in half of the suitcase, ready for the hubby to fill up his side.
Now, for my beauty products, that' a different story. Unfortunately when I use three tubes of mascara, a variety of lipstick shades, and a bunch of brushes on a daily basis, making things concise isn't always easy. That'll all just go in the suitcase's front zipper pocket along with my bras and undies-- all the necessities.
Maybe I'll figure out a way to make packing all of that in a efficient way. For now, this will have to do. I am Road Trip Ready!
Stay Sweet,
Allison

Loved your clever tip on keeping necklace chains from getting tangled in transit! Not that I travel much, but I'll keep this in mind for my next road trip to Ohio. ;o)
